Learning To Play the Guitar
Learning to play the guitar takes a lot
of practice and lots of persistence. It also takes proper
instruction. Luckily, with technology as advanced as it is
today, there are more and more ways to learn how to strum those
guitar strings correctly. You can learn on your own, what
musicians call learning by ear, you can learn by reading
websites or books, and you can even learn by using guitar
software. The best way to learn to play those guitar
strings, however, is to learn from an instructor. An instructor
will show you the proper way to pick or strum the guitar
strings, how to place your hands and fingers correctly, and an
instructor can also stop you whenever he or she sees you using
bad habits. Using good habits while playing and practicing is
the only way to properly learn how to play this beautiful
instrument.
Tuning The
Strings
Before you can properly learn how to play the guitar, you
must make sure the guitar strings are properly tuned. You can
tune the guitar using a manual tuner like they used to use in
the old days, or you can use an electric one. A manual tuner
has you blow into the tuner and then tweaking the guitar
strings until you get the proper pitch. An electric tuner is
much easier to use. You simply strum the guitar strings until
they register correctly on the automatic tuner. Once you get
better, however, the ideal way to tune is just by listening to
the strings and then adjusting them accordingly. Once you get
used to how they sound, you should be able to tune the strings
using nothing but your ears.
Strumming and
Picking
Playing the guitar involves either picking or strumming the
guitar strings. You make different notes by using your other
hand on the fret bar. By putting pressure on the strings along
the fret bar, you can manipulate the sound produced when you
strum or pick the strings. Some songs call for you to strum the
guitar strings and others call for you to pick them. Most songs
involve both, however, so you should become well versed in both
methods. Strumming is easy as you are just taking a pick and
running it up and down the guitar strings. Picking is a little
trickier but with enough practice, you'll be able to pick the
guitar strings like a pro.
With enough practice, you'll be playing beautiful music in
no time. Just make sure you use proper habits so that you know
you're playing correctly. Even if you taught yourself or you
learned by yourself, you should still have an expert watch you
play just to ensure you didn't pick up any bad habits along the
way that will hinder your playing abilities.
